The 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards had some of the best fashion worn by the stars of television and film. It looked like the television actresses were stepping out for the Oscars because there was more haute couture on the red carpet than fashion week. There was also a little bit of controversy with Claire Danes who wore a red Givenchy Haute Couture gown that was the same dress that Kim Kardashian wore to her wedding (just in white). I guess there is no longer the idea of “one of kind” when it come to haute couture!

Every color of rainbow was worn on the red carpet but one of the most popular hues was red. Once seen as a fashion faux pas to wear on the carpet there was something very patriotic and free about the color. All tones of the color were worn some were darker and lighter. Men stars January Jones and Christina Hendricks both were the color, and I was wondering if they were planning on it.

Lena Dunham who wore an edgy Giambattista Valli Haute Couture with a white sleeveless jacket worn over her white, pink and red feathered gown. Her co-star Allison Williams was also in a creation by Valli but resembled a young Grace Kelly in a strapless white ball gown with a black bow detail at the bust and a yellow ribbon on the waist. The corset was floral fabric. I thought it a funny occurrence that both “Girls” stars were Valli. It’s nice to see them both in couture. Not to mention also Dunham new platinum hair color.

One of my favorite looks of the night was Lizzy Caplan’s black and white floor length cut out gown by Donna Karan Atelier. It was black in the front and white in the back, if you are looking for something edgy, sexy, and modern Donna Karan is the designer for you. She made Caplan look like the goddess of the Emmy and unfortunately she didn’t win the Emmy for her role on “Masters of Sex”. Lizzy is currently on my best-dressed list and I can’t wait to see more from this actress who has grown into such a woman after her role 10 years ago in “Mean Girls”.

Another actress I was excited to see was Kerry Washington from ABC’s “Scandal” who made one of her first award show appearances since having her baby. She was in a beautiful orange strapless Prada gown that made her look so stunning. Kerry’s fashion is something I feel every woman loves to see because she’s so influential. She was also the only woman on the carpet in orange. It was fashion risk that paid off, just like the designer of her dress, Miuccia Prada. I feel that Kerry has found a design house that truly understands her and makes her look so glamorous!!

Comedienne Sarah Silverman was my biggest surprise of the evening because she looked so lady-like in an emerald green dress by the Italian fashion house Marni. She’s not known for her style but I felt she really looked beautiful and sexy. She also won an Emmy for her HBO comedy special! Even better!

Ladies of Orange in the New Black took their first Emmy experience to the next level. Their gowns were far from their orange jumpsuits and each actress wore a different color and all looked so beautiful. I was truly bummed out that the show didn’t win any Emmys but they looked fabulous!!
